The sun moves, shadows change; there is only a short period of time that an artist has to capture the shifts of light and color when painting outdoors - but it is this very desire to distill the energy and freshness of nature that drives the plein air painter. Susquehanna Valley Plein Air Painters was formed to bring together artists who share this passion.

A PRACTICE PAINTING, 8x10, oil, by Sharon Benner
This small practice painting was my first plein air painting in several months. I tried to capture the light, warm areas and the dark, cool areas. It was difficult to simplify the colors when there were so many brightly colored leaves and reflected light splashing everywhere. Painted Wed., 24 Oct. and it was a beautiful day.

I am glad that you got out to enjoy the Indian summer weather and good to capture the fall colors before the coming storm brings them all down. So happy that you got out to enjoy the peace, connection, and even therapy that painting brings.
Practice or not-this piece is ready to be framed and sold-a wonderful example of plein air painting.
Thank you Ladies, I do hope our group gets out to paint the naked trees this winter, I love the strength they create with trunks and branches and beautiful grays in the landscape.
This is stunning, Sharon, with a beautiful palette of colors. Whenever you want to go out to paint this winter, please let me know! We'll post it on the blog.
